I was talking to an art gallery that I was interested in getting into business with, and they were telling me how their business model works. Basically, they put a really high price tag on an art piece from their contracted artists, and if it sells the artists is given something like 2% of the selling price — the gallery makes 98% minus whatever it takes to run their business.
The owner was telling me how he’ll put a $13,000 price tag on a piece that the artist usually wouldn’t ask any more than a couple hundred for. If the piece sells the artist gets about the same amount as they would have made otherwise. He went on to brag about how he’s helping artists make a name for themselves, and how he’s creating more visibility for art, etc.
I felt dirty just listening to him, but it did get me thinking…
How about the same type of business model, but with the percentages adjusted to be in favor of the artist? There are a lot of creative minds in Austin — this seems like the perfect place to get in touch with artists and start an online gallery.
